May.
OVER 840 residents were assisted during the Customer Service Roadshows held at malls across the City over the weekend in May. The Roadshows were held at Bridge City in KwaMashu, Galleria Mall and Musgrave Centre with officials from the following departments; Electricity, Water and Revenue, Sizakala Customer Service Centres as well as the City Integrity and Investigations Unit (CIIU).

Among the over 840 residents who received assistance from Municipal officials was Lucy Mantshantsha, 85, who woke up early on Saturday morning to ensure she was one of the first residents to be assisted at Bridge City. She was excited when she heard that the City would be bringing officials to the community so she would not have to travel to the city centre to get help, she said.

Mantshantsha, who lives in a RDP house, said her home leaks terribly whenever it rains. There is also water leaking on her property and she is not sure of the source. Her details were captured and would be followed up by officials from the relevant units. “I came for help from the City. I am so happy that they are here, it is like a dream. I can’t believe it. It shows that the City cares and I am happy that finally I have someone listening to me,” said an elated Mantshantsha.

Mantshantsha was one of hundreds of residents who visited the Customer Service Roadshows which were held at malls across the City over the weekend. Roadshows were held at Bridge City, Galleria and Musgrave Centre from 19 to 20 May from 9am to 6pm. EThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede interacted with residents reassuring them that trained officials were on hand to assist them with their queries during the Roadshow at Bridge City. “The decision to bring our services to the people is in keeping with our commitment to our Batho Pele Principles and in response to the numerous complaints received from our customers regarding their bills.”

Another happy resident was Joseph Makhanya, 85, from KwaMashu who has a high water bill. He thinks there is a leak on his property. Mayor Gumede assured him that officials would assist him. Further roadshows are planned for the weekend of 9 to 10 June at the Chatsworth Centre, Hammersdale Mall and both Mega City and kwaMnyandu malls.

The following services will be on offer at the Roadshows:
  • Revenue: Account enquiries, consolidations, transfers, terminations, credit authorities and rebates to senior citizens;
  • Water: Accounts inquiries, meter readings queries, water leaks and registration of water services;
  • Electricity: Accounts enquiries, meter readings and checking of applications status and;
  • Sizakala: Any other Municipal related service enquiries and employment application forms among other services on offer.
