CITY CELEBRATES CULTURE AND TALENT AT ARTICULATE AFRICA LAUNCH

The Articulate Africa programme was successfully launched at uMkhumbane Museum today, marking an important step in nurturing the City’s creative and literary landscape.

The event saw an impressive attendance of book authors and creatives, reflecting strong interest and support from the arts community.

Articulate Africa is the City’s initiative to showcase and celebrate local talent in the fields of literature, art, craft, design, film, sport, media and music. It aims to unlock the economic and creative potential of residents, while promoting the City’s diverse literary heritage.

During the official launch, a book titled “Beyond the Pen Volume 3”, showcasing diverse voices and storytelling from emerging and established writers, was officially launched.

Speaking at the launch, the Director of Recreation and Parks, Dr Simphiwe Ndlovu, said the programme is designed to enrich culture, uncover and develop local talent, and promote the growth of creative arts in eThekwini.

The initiative also aims to foster collaboration amongst artists, writers, and cultural practitioners, creating a vibrant platform for expression and exchange.

The Articulate Africa programme will now be rolled out in all regions of eThekwini, ensuring that more communities have access to platforms that celebrate creativity, storytelling, and artistic development.

It will feature creative writing workshops, cultural dialogues, book club seminars, production masterclasses, and book launches to provide meaningful opportunities for creatives to grow and thrive.

The next programme will continue at Midway Crossing on 4 May, followed by Umnini Thusong Centre on 5 May.

Thereafter, an event takes place at Clermont Library on 13 May and Ohlange Secondary on 14 May. The main programme takes place at the Durban Exhibition Centre, from 18 to 20 May 2026. Entrance is free.

By bringing together artists, writers, and cultural practitioners, Articulate Africa seeks to strengthen the City’s position as a hub of creativity and innovation, while ensuring that local voices and stories resonate across Africa and beyond.
