CITY MARKS MAJOR MILESTONE WITH COMPLETION OF WATER PIPELINE PROJECT AT PROSPECTON

EThekwini Municipality has successfully completed a critical water infrastructure project aimed at strengthening reliable water supply to the Prospecton industrial area and surrounding communities, including Isiphingo.

The City’s technical team from the Water Services Directorate worked round the clock this past weekend to complete several complex tie-ins along Prospecton Road, demonstrating a high level of skill, coordination, and commitment to service excellence.

The project, which commenced in June 2025, involved replacing an aging 375mm asbestos cement pipeline, previously prone to frequent bursts with a new 400mm steel pipeline.

This upgrade incorporates modern engineering standards and improved materials, ensuring the system can withstand higher pressures and deliver consistent performance.

The Prospecton industrial hub, home to major clients such as Toyota South Africa and South African Breweries, had previously experienced disruptions due to pipeline failures.

The improved infrastructure now ensures greater reliability, supporting business continuity and economic growth.

Executive Director for Technical Services Ednick Msweli said the upgrade is designed to withstand higher pressures, ensuring uninterrupted water delivery to the industrial hub.

“The completion of this pipeline replacement marks a significant milestone in our commitment to provide reliable and sustainable water services. This upgrade will drastically reduce service interruptions and support the continuous operations of businesses in Prospecton, safeguarding both production and economic activity in the region,” said Msweli.

The pipeline tie-in has been completed, with only a few remaining household connections to be finalised today, 23 March.

While the pipeline replacement cost R13.5 million, the total project investment, including road reinstatement, amounts to R25 million.

This project forms part of the Municipality’s broader infrastructure renewal programme, which prioritises modernisation of aging networks, skills-driven service delivery, and long-term sustainability of essential services.
