DR PIXLEY KASEME STREET REHABILITATION PROJECT ON TRACK FOR MID-JUNE COMPLETION

An oversight visit to assess progress of the rehabilitation of Dr Pixley KaSeme Street in the Durban Central Business District revealed the project is on track for its scheduled completion date in mid-June.

The oversight visit was led by Chairperson of the Human Settlements, Engineering, and Transport Committee, Councillor Themba Mvubu, on Thursday evening, 4 June to monitor progress on the rehabilitation of the road.

The project forms part of eThekwini Municipality's ongoing Inner-City Road Rehabilitation Programme, a strategic initiative aimed at restoring, modernising, and strengthening key transport infrastructure to improve mobility and support economic growth within the city centre.

During the oversight visit, Councillor Mvubu received progress reports on the rehabilitation of Dr Pixley KaSeme Street and ongoing upgrades along uMgeni Road.

He was also briefed on preparations for the rehabilitation of Margaret Mncadi Avenue, with construction expected to commence later this month.

Councillor Mvubu welcomed the positive progress made by contractors and project teams, saying the rehabilitation works on both Dr Pixley KaSeme Street and uMgeni Road remain on schedule and are expected to be completed by mid-June.

“These investments demonstrate the Municipality's commitment to providing safe, reliable, and efficient road infrastructure for residents, businesses, commuters, and visitors. The rehabilitation programme will significantly improve road safety, traffic flow, accessibility, and contribute to the continued revitalisation of Durban's inner city,” said Councillor Mvubu.

The Municipality has allocated R21 million for the rehabilitation of Dr Pixley KaSeme Street, R8 million for upgrades on uMgeni Road, and R16.5 million for the rehabilitation of Margaret Mncadi Avenue.

Councillor Mvubu added that the road improvement projects form part of the City's broader Infrastructure Investment Programme aimed at enhancing service delivery, stimulating economic activity, and creating a more accessible and resilient transport network for all road users.
