DURBAN DRIVE-IN SITE NUMBERS DECREASE AS REPATRIATION CONTINUES

EThekwini Municipality notes a significant decrease in the number of undocumented Malawian nationals at the Durban Drive-In site as ongoing repatriation efforts continue.

This follows the coordinated relocation process to Musina, Limpopo, undertaken in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs and supporting non-profit organisations.

Since the commencement of operations to transport Malawian nationals to Musina, the Municipality has provided critical support to ensure the efficient processing and transportation of individuals.

To date, approximately 7 000 people have been successfully transported to Limpopo.

A total of 58 buses departed from the site yesterday, while a further 10 buses departed this morning.

An additional 70 buses are scheduled to leave throughout today as part of intensified efforts to conclude the operation.

The Municipality anticipates that all remaining individuals will be transported by tomorrow.

Currently, an estimated 300 individuals remain awaiting entry to the site for processing.

To improve operational efficiency, the Municipality is also engaging with the Department of Home Affairs regarding the procurement of a dedicated truck to transport luggage, as baggage has been identified as a contributing factor to space constraints on the buses.

EThekwini Municipality remains committed to supporting national government in ensuring that the repatriation process is conducted in a safe, dignified, and orderly manner.
