DURBAN FASHION FAIR TRAINS 25 NEW MODELS AHEAD OF 15TH ANNIVERSARY SHOWCASE
Twenty-five aspiring models are undergoing an intensive training programme in Durban this week, as eThekwini Municipality builds towards the 15th anniversary of its flagship Durban Fashion Fair (DFF), taking place from 16 to 18 September 2026 at the Durban Exhibition Centre.
The model bootcamp began on 15 August at the Gooderson Tropicana Hotel in Durban and runs through to the models' official runway debut at the milestone showcase. Participants comprising a diverse group of female and male models were scouted and selected through the 2026 Regional DFF Model Search roadshows held across eThekwini earlier this year, with the search concluding in June.
The programme covers runway technique, model etiquette, confidence building, media coaching, social media marketing, personal brand positioning and professional industry readiness, equipping emerging talent with the practical skills needed to pursue sustainable careers in fashion.
The 25 trainees will make their official runway debut at the 15th DFF under the theme "Where Legacy Lives," showcasing collections by emerging and established designers. The showcase will give them valuable exposure to audiences and industry professionals and potential clients as they begin building their modelling careers.
The City's Economic Development and Planning Committee Chairperson, Councillor Thembo Ntuli, said the programme demonstrates the City's commitment to developing talent and creating economic opportunities within the fashion value chain.
"DFF creates a pathway from talent discovery to professional development and market exposure. Our investment in these young models supports confidence, entrepreneurship and access to opportunities within the fashion value chain. As we celebrate 15 years of DFF, we are proud to introduce a new generation of talent while creating opportunities for them to build sustainable careers," said Ntuli.
The programme's impact is already evident through former DFF Model Search beneficiary Cynthia Gumede, who was discovered and trained as part of the 2025 cohort. Gumede is currently in Vietnam participating in the Vietnam Beauty Fashion Fest, an international opportunity that followed the exposure she received at last year's DFF showcase, where international Industry experts identified her talent.
"DFF changed my confidence and gave me the industry exposure I needed. Since participating in the programme, I have worked with recognised brands such as Tropika, collaborated with fashion designers and featured in major fashion shows. I am grateful to eThekwini Municipality for investing in young talent and creating platforms that continue to open doors, including international opportunities," said Gumede.
Members of the public and media who wish to attend the 15th DFF or follow the journey and progress of this year’s trainees, are encouraged to follow @Durban Fashion Fair across all social media platforms.
