FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ETHEKWINI HONOURS FEARLESS FIREFIGHTERS ON INTERNATIONAL FIREFIGHTERS’ DAY

In a powerful and moving commemoration of International Firefighters’ Day, eThekwini Municipality honoured fearless heroes and heroines, men and women who risk their lives daily to protect communities, save lives, and stand as the City’s first line of defence in times of crisis.

This emotionally charged ceremony held today at the eThekwini Fire Services Headquarters, paid tribute to both serving firefighters and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The commemoration brought the realities of firefighting to life through gripping live demonstrations that showcased the intensity, precision, and courage required when every second counts.

From high-risk smoke room search-and-rescue operations to complex drills such as 464 ladder pitching and hose dragging, firefighters demonstrated the strength, discipline, and teamwork that define their daily mission.

Each demonstration offered a rare glimpse into the high-pressure environments firefighters face, where life and loss lies in skill, training, and bravery.

Delivering a heartfelt tribute, Chief Fire Officer Enock Mchunu, reflected on the true meaning of the day.

“Today is not just a ceremony, but a tribute and a celebration of the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of the men and women who stand ready to protect our lives,” he said.

He added that firefighters run toward danger when others are running away. They face raging flames, unpredictable disasters and life-threatening situations with bravery that inspires us all.

“When the alarm sounds, you do not hesitate, that is heroism in its purest form,” said Mchunu.

The ceremony also paid tribute and remembered brothers and sisters who answered their last call in the line of duty.

There was a solemn moment of silence and the ringing of the ceremonial bell, honouring fallen firefighters whose bravery will never be forgotten.

Manager of Fire and Emergency Services, Cosmos Mnganga reinforced the City’s commitment to its frontline responders highlighting the significant role of the firefighters in communities.

“Our firefighters are more than emergency personnel - they are the heartbeat of community safety,” he said

He added that behind every siren is a parent, a sibling, a neighbour who has chosen to put others first.

“We remain committed to investing in their training, wellbeing, and resources because protecting those who protect us is non-negotiable,” said Mnganga.

As part of the global observance of this significant day, residents were encouraged to play their role in supporting emergency services by practising fire safety and respecting first responders.
