ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE DECISIONS
The City’s Executive Committee (EXCO) today, 17 March, held a meeting with discussions primarily focused on the recent temporary water supply disruptions affecting parts of eThekwini.
During the meeting, an update on water and sanitation services was presented following a reduction in bulk water supply from uMngeni-uThukela Water.
This issue has since been resolved.
STATUS OF WATER SUPPLY
Noticeable progress has been made in stabilising reservoir levels supplied by the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works, operated by uMngeni-uThukela Water.
This improvement follows the successful repair of a valve at Nagle Dam, which had previously reduced the flow of raw water to the treatment works.
The Durban Heights Water Treatment Works supplies water through the Northern and Southern Aqueduct systems.
With the restoration of raw water supply, most affected reservoirs have recovered and reached adequate levels.
As a result, continuous water supply has been restored in many areas, eliminating the need for the previously proposed scheduled water rationing.
However, some reservoirs have not yet fully recovered and will remain under controlled rationing while the system continues to stabilise.
AREAS STILL UNDER RATIONING
* Tshelimnyama M1 Reservoir: Supplying areas including Nagina, remains under rationing due to a burst pipe affecting the system.
* UMlazi Reservoirs (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6): Supplying Sections C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, W, AA, BB and CC, as well as Malukazi and surrounding areas.
Challenges are linked to high demand on the Southern Aqueduct system.
Relief is expected upon completion of the ongoing aqueduct upgrade project.
* Shallcross Reservoir: Has not yet recovered, affecting Buffels Bosch, Burlington Heights, Moseley Park, Queensburgh, Savannah Park and Shallcross.
* Folweni 1 and 2 Reservoirs: Supplying Folweni A, B and C, Golokodo, Dodoza, Isiphingo and Esincane, remain under rationing due to intermittent supply.
* Ntuzuma Reservoirs (4, 5 and 7): Supplying Ntuzuma, Inanda and surrounding areas, will continue with midday shutdowns.
* Phoenix Reservoirs (1 and 2): Remain below optimal levels. Areas including Sunford, Hannaford, Phoenix Highway, Longcroft, Longbury, Plaza, Southbury, Eastbury, Grove End, Sastri Park, Caneside, Canehaven and Woodview will continue to experience evening shutdowns.
* Trenance Reservoirs (1 and 2): Remain under pressure due to illegal water connections, which are significantly impacting system stability.
WAY FORWARD
The City continues to closely monitor reservoir levels and system performance.
Further updates will be issued as the water supply system stabilises.
Residents, businesses and other stakeholders are urged to use water sparingly to support system recovery and help maintain a stable supply during this period.
