ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY EXPANDS WARDS TO 112 FOLLOWING DEMARCATION PROCESS
The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB)has completed public consultations on ward boundaries ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections, resulting in the addition of a new ward for eThekwini Municipality.
This increases the City’s total wards from 111 to 112.
Consultations were held across the northern, southern, western, and central regions of the City.
The additional ward will be located in the northern region of the Municipality.
As part of the boundary adjustments, the Mophela area in Ward 5 and a portion of Ward 105 will be incorporated into uMkhambathini Municipality, effective after the 2026 elections.
The process, which began in 2023, involved reviewing both outer municipal boundaries and inner ward boundaries.
The MDB has submitted the final ward determinations to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), which, together with eThekwini Municipality, conducted the last round of consultative meetings with affected communities.
Executive Director in the Office of the City Manager Sipho Cele emphasised that the ward delimitation process must be seamless to ensure a smooth electoral process.
He noted that the transfer of assets, including a cemetery previously managed by eThekwini Municipality, will be coordinated with uMkhambathini Municipality.
Residents affected by the boundary changes will be contacted by the IEC regarding election-related processes.
