ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY INVESTIGATES ALLEGED THEFT INVOLVING CONTRACTOR STAFF

EThekwini Municipality has launched an investigation into allegations of theft following the circulation of a video on social media allegedly showing contract staff interfering with goods belonging to a delivery driver while on duty.

The Municipality views the allegations in a serious light and condemns all acts of criminality. Conduct of this nature would be wholly unacceptable and does not reflect the values, ethics and standards expected of those working on behalf of the City.

The allegations are of particular concern as the individuals in the video were reportedly deployed to carry out electricity repairs. If substantiated, any departure from assigned duties to engage in criminal conduct would represent a serious breach of public trust and would undermine the City's commitment to professional service delivery.

An internal investigation is under way to establish the facts. The Municipality will cooperate fully with law enforcement should a criminal investigation be instituted, and appropriate action will be taken against any individual found to have engaged in unlawful or unethical conduct, in terms of the applicable contractual and disciplinary processes.

The City assures residents that it maintains a zero-tolerance approach to theft, corruption and misconduct, and to any behaviour that undermines public confidence in municipal service delivery.
