FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HAIR AND BEAUTY SALON REGISTRATION PROGRAMME TO STRENGTHEN COMPLIANCE AND GROWTH

More than 600 hair and beauty salon owners, operators, and industry stakeholders have responded positively to eThekwini Municipality’s initiative to formalise and strengthen the sector.

The strong turnout underscores the importance of improving compliance while unlocking growth opportunities for businesses across the City.

The Municipality today, 25 June, officially launched its Hair and Beauty Salon Business Registration Programme at uMlazi V-Section Hall under the theme “Compliance Support and Registration.”

The programme aims to establish a comprehensive database of salon businesses, promote regulatory compliance, and identify areas where support is needed to help salons operate legally, safely, and sustainably.

The initiative forms part of the implementation of the Business Licensing Bylaw, which was adopted by Full Council in 2024 and came into effect in 2025.

The Bylaw introduced provisions for the registration of hair and beauty salons, recognising the sector as a significant contributor to the local economy.

The launch brought together salon owners and industry stakeholders, who received valuable information on a range of regulatory and business development matters.

These included licensing requirements, land use management, fire safety, environmental health, waste management, informal trade regulations, and business support services available through the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Financial institutions were also on hand to provide information on funding opportunities and assist business owners with opening bank accounts.

Addressing attendees, Chairperson of the City’s Economic Development and Planning Committee, Councillor Thembo Ntuli, described the initiative as an important milestone in strengthening one of the City’s most vibrant economic sectors.

“The hair and beauty industry plays a critical role in job creation, entrepreneurship, and the empowerment of women and young people. Through this registration programme, we are not only developing a credible database of businesses but also creating pathways for targeted support, skills development, and future economic opportunities.

“Our goal is to ensure that salon owners become visible, compliant, and well-positioned to build sustainable enterprises that contribute meaningfully to the local economy,” said Councillor Ntuli.

He added that formalising businesses would enhance consumer confidence, promote fair business practices, and improve public health and safety standards across the industry.

Following the positive response to the launch, the registration campaign will be expanded to additional regions across eThekwini in July as the Municipality intensifies efforts to support business formalisation, broaden economic participation, and stimulate job creation.

Salon owners can register their businesses at the City’s regional Business Licensing offices located at:

• Embassy Building, Durban CBD

• Verulam Sizakala Centre

• Winkelspruit Sizakala Centre

• Pinetown Regional Centre

• Ntuzuma Sizakala Centre, Midway Crossing
