ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INTERMITTENT WATER SUPPLY DUE TO REDUCED PRODUCTION AND HIGH DEMAND
EThekwini Municipality wishes to inform residents and businesses of intermittent water supply and outages currently affecting parts of the City, particularly areas supplied through the Southern Aqueduct.
This disruption is due to reduced input from our bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water, which is experiencing algae-related challenges at Reservoir 2 of the Durban Heights Treatment Works.
These algae blooms have impacted production capacity, reducing the volume of water supplied to the Municipal network.
Compounding the situation, the ongoing heatwave has led to high water demand, placing additional strain on the City’s distribution system.
To manage supply, the Municipality, in coordination with uMngeni-uThukela Water, is implementing mitigation measures, including the temporary closure of certain reservoir outlets during evenings and re-opening in the morning to prioritize peak demand.
Water tankers have also been dispatched to support affected communities.
The Municipality appeals to all residents to reduce water consumption.
Responsible use of water during this critical period is essential to allow reservoirs to recover and ensure equitable distribution.
