MAYOR XABA ASSURES SAFE, BUMPER EASTER WEEKEND FOR RESIDENTS AND VISITORS
EThekwini is geared up for a bumper Easter holiday, with Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba assuring residents and visitors that the city has left nothing to chance in preparing for a safe, incident-free weekend.
The Mayor joined a multidisciplinary operation in Isipingo, south of Durban, aimed at boosting road safety and ensuring an incident-free holiday. He stressed the importance of visible policing and cautioned against lawlessness, particularly drinking and driving.
During the operation, 2,000 vehicles were stopped. Of these, 100 were fined for defects, 15 for moving violations, and several summonses were issued. Police also effected 22 arrests for outstanding warrants and detained five drivers.
To safeguard the city, more than 1,000 police personnel have been deployed across all regions. Their duties include patrolling tourism sites, freeways, shopping malls, and church gatherings.
“Our intention is to minimise road crashes and crime in general. We cannot achieve this alone but we need full cooperation from road users to ensure they abide by the rules of the road,” said Mayor Xaba.
Mayor Xaba said he was confident that the city would meet its target of welcoming 1.2 million visitors this Easter.
“We are delighted that 20 of our bathing beaches remain open and safe for swimming, alongside 42 swimming pools across the city. To protect bathers, 200 lifeguards have been deployed along the coastline. In addition, the newly established Coastal and Tourism Policing Unit will patrol 100 kilometres of our coastline on foot, horseback, in vehicles, and on bicycles,” he said.
For those seeking entertainment, the city has curated a series of signature events, all closely monitored by police in collaboration with private law enforcement agencies.
