MAYOR XABA BESTOWS SOUTH AFRICAN NAVY WITH FREEDOM OF THE CITY HONOUR ON WORLD HYDROGRAPHY DAY

EThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba has bestowed the South African Navy with the Freedom of the City honour, a significant occasion that coincided with the commemoration of World Hydrography Day today, 21 June.

The ceremonial honour, also known as the Right of Entry Parade, took place on Dr Pixley KaSeme Street.

The event formed part of a three-day programme aimed at raising awareness of hydrography and strengthening the long-standing maritime partnership between the City and the armed forces.

Addressing attendees during the parade, Mayor Xaba commended the South African Navy for its vigilance and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation and protecting its territorial integrity.

“In granting this freedom, we publicly acknowledge and affirm your vital role in guaranteeing our national security, protecting our economic interests, and standing as steadfast guardians of our maritime heritage,” he said.

The Freedom of the City parade symbolises unity and mutual trust between the Municipality and the armed forces.

Through this honour, the Mayor grants sailors permission to march through the City with swords drawn, colours flying, drums beating, and bands playing.

In return, the South African Navy reassures the Mayor and residents that its weapons are not intended to threaten citizens, but to protect the City’s shores, ports, and maritime interests.

Reflecting on the significance of World Hydrography Day, Mayor Xaba said: “As we observe this day, let us recognise that the sea is a source of life, livelihood, and security. Let us reaffirm our commitment to harnessing its potential, protecting its resources, and navigating its challenges together.”

EThekwini Municipality first conferred the Freedom of the City honour on the South African Navy in 2016.

Accepting the honour on behalf of the Navy, Chief of the South African Navy, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, highlighted the enduring relationship between the two institutions.

“Ten years ago, we stood here to celebrate this partnership, and today we return to commemorate and strengthen the long-standing relationship between the South African Navy and eThekwini Municipality, which has endured for many years,” he said.

Activities leading up to World Hydrography Day began on 12 June and included performances by the South African Navy Band at shopping centres across eThekwini, public ship visits and displays, defence industry exhibitions, a World Hydrography Day lecture, and a community concert.
