FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MAYOR XABA LEADS CITY DELEGATION TO ZUNGU FAMILY FOLLOWING WATER TANKER INCIDENT

EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, and the Speaker of Council, Councillor Thabani Nyawose, today visited the family of Celani Zungu, who allegedly lost his life after being run over by a municipal water tanker in Adams Mission, south of Durban, yesterday.

On behalf of the municipality, Mayor Xaba conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family. He assured them that a team of municipal officials, together with the Ward Councillor, Lihle Makhanya, will work closely with the family during the time of bereavement.

"We were deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident. We appeal for calm and urge the community to allow the South African Police Service to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter," said Mayor Xaba.

Adams Mission is among several rural communities in eThekwini that rely on water tankers due to water demand exceeding the available supply.

To improve water security in the southern areas, the municipality is implementing several major infrastructure projects. These include the R1.2 billion Southern Aqueduct upgrade, which is expected to be commissioned in December this year.

Another key intervention is the R11 billion Lower uMkhomazi Bulk Water Scheme, which involves the construction of a storage dam, a water abstraction point on the uMkhomazi River, and a water treatment plant. The project is currently 50% complete. Once completed, it will produce 100 megalitres of water per day, with 70 megalitres allocated to eThekwini Municipality. This will significantly improve and stabilise water supply from Isipingo to uMkhomazi.
