MAYOR XABA RECOMMISSIONS OTHONGATHI CREMATORIUM FOLLOWING R6 MILLION UPGRADE

In a significant step towards restoring critical public services and addressing infrastructure backlogs, eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba has announced the recommissioning of the oThongathi Crematorium.

The reopening forms part of the Municipality’s broader strategy to rehabilitate ageing crematoria infrastructure and eliminate operational backlogs across the City.

More than R6 million was invested in the facility to replace broken and malfunctioning furnaces that had resulted in prolonged service disruptions, causing considerable inconvenience and distress to affected communities.

The successful installation, testing, and commissioning of the new state-of-the-art furnace infrastructure marks the restoration of full cremation services at the facility.

Mayor Xaba said the reopening of the crematorium represents more than the return of an essential Municipal service. “The recommissioning of the oThongathi Crematorium not only restores a vital Municipal service but also restores dignity and respect to the cultural and religious traditions that are deeply valued by our communities.”

The restoration of the cremation will provide residents with access to a reliable and accessible facility closer to home.

The recommissioning of the oThongathi Crematorium underscores the Municipality’s commitment to improving service delivery, maintaining critical infrastructure, and ensuring that residents receive dignified and efficient municipal services.
