MAYOR XABA RELOCATES SHONGWENI FLOOD VICTIMS TO NEW TEMPORARY RESIDENTIAL UNITS
EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, today conducted an oversight visit to Shongweni, where 19 families affected by the devastating 2022 floods have been relocated to newly built Temporary Residential Units (TRUs).
Following the floods, the families were accommodated in a mass care centre before receiving building materials to erect temporary shelters as an interim measure.
Mayor Xaba said the Municipality, working in partnership with the provincial and national governments, had secured funding to construct the TRUs while finalising plans to build permanent homes for the families on the same site.
"This project forms part of the Municipality's broader programme to rebuild communities affected by recurring floods. We have now finalised plans to construct permanent houses for these families on this site," said Mayor Xaba.
He added that significant progress has already been made in the City's flood recovery programme.
"A few months ago, we relocated 113 families to newly built permanent homes in Cornubia. Upon completion, the project will yield 1200 units. We have also begun relocating some families from rented accommodation to the government-owned Montclair Lodge, where more than 160 families have already taken occupation," he said.
Beneficiaries of the Shongweni TRUs welcomed the intervention, saying the new accommodation has restored their dignity and provided peace of mind.
