FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
METRO POLICE OPERATIONS YIELD ARRESTS, DRUG SEIZURES AND WARRANT ENFORCEMENT
The eThekwini Municipality, through the Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS), continues to intensify its crackdown on crime following a series of targeted, intelligence-driven operations across the metro.
Between 31 August and 4 September, the DMPS arrested 150 people with outstanding warrants across the eThekwini Municipality area. Of these, 115 paid their outstanding fines and were released, while 35 remained in custody for further legal proceedings.
On 8 September, the DMPS Drug Team, working with Counter Narcotics KZN Crime Intelligence and Port Shepstone DPCI, arrested a 30-year-old man in Chatsworth for allegedly selling drugs openly at the corner of Crimby Avenue and Silverheights Road.
Officers seized 100 sachets of crystal methamphetamine and 95 mandrax tablets valued at R14 750.
A separate operation in Bayview, with Counter Narcotics KZN and Crime Intelligence, led to another arrest and the seizure of suspected crack cocaine and dagga valued at R26 300.
On 7 September, a trio crimes operation in the North Area involving Metro Police, SAPS, Crime Intelligence, the Hawks and the K9 Unit led to the arrest of a suspect for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
A pistol with a filed-off serial number, a magazine and five live rounds were recovered, and the suspect is being investigated in connection with attempted murder and business robbery.
The DMPS has also intensified foot patrols along Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street following complaints of ATM scams, and conducted by-law enforcement and clean-up operations along the M4 Southern Freeway.
These operations run alongside the daily mandate of Metro Police: traffic policing, enforcing municipal by-laws and crime prevention.
The Municipality reaffirms its commitment to enforcing the rule of law and by-laws without fear or favour, in the interest of the safety of residents and visitors.
