FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MUNICIPALITY URGES RESIDENTS TO REDUCE WATER CONSUMPTION AMID SUPPLY DISRUPTION

EThekwini Municipality appeals to residents and businesses to use water sparingly following an incident affecting the supply of raw water to parts of eThekwini.

On 11 March, the City’s bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water reported that a valve at Nagle Dam was damaged.

This incident has affected the supply of raw water to the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works, which provides treated water to several areas across the City in both the northern and southern regions.

The damage to the valve has resulted in a significant reduction in the amount of raw water reaching the treatment works.

Currently, there is an estimated shortfall of approximately 150 megalitres of water per day that would normally be supplied to the City for treatment and distribution.

The damaged valve has since been removed, and repair work is underway.

However, this is a complex technical process, and it may take time to fully restore normal operations.

During this period, the Municipality is working to balance the water supply system across affected areas.

To help maintain supply and preventing further disruptions, the City urges residents and businesses to reduce water consumption and use water only for essential purposes.

The cooperation of the public is critical in helping the Municipality manage the current shortfall while repairs are being completed.
