NEW HAMMARSDALE TAXI RANK SET TO DRIVE LOCAL ECONOMIC GROWTH AND JOB CREATION
As industrial hubs in Durban and Pinetown reach peak capacity, Hammarsdale has officially transitioned from a historic textile node into the eThekwini Municipality’s primary frontier for industrial and logistics expansion.
Strategically positioned along the vital N3 Durban-to-Johannesburg corridor, the area is currently undergoing a massive revitalisation, fuelled by a blend of public infrastructure upgrades and high-value private sector investment.
The centrepiece of this transformation is the R4 billion Keystone Park development. This 115-hectare, modern logistics precinct, is set to redefine the region’s economic landscape, creating approximately 5 000 permanent jobs and 3 500 construction roles. Designed with green development principles, Keystone Park provides a "clean" industrial solution for businesses seeking immediate, serviced land in a secure, landscaped environment.
To support this influx of interest, the eThekwini Municipality has committed to a phased infrastructure rollout. Current investigations are underway to upgrade and widen Main Road 385 and construction is currently well underway with upgrade of the Hammarsdale Wastewater Treatment Works.
These efforts align with the City’s Industrial Renewal Strategy, which has already successfully delivered the Hammarsdale Junction shopping mall and significant public realm upgrades, including sidewalk improvements and new informal trading facilities.
A budget of R54 million has been allocated for the Hammarsdale Transport and Traders Hub project, with the Ojama/Bukasiwe JV appointed as the main contractor for an 18-month implementation period, which commenced in September 2025.
“Hammarsdale is no longer just a recovery story; it is a strategic necessity for the province. With 151 hectares of serviced, industrial-zoned land available, it is the only area capable of absorbing the logistics demand triggered by the upcoming Durban dug-out port expansions.” says Peter Gilmore: Senior Programs Manager from the Programme Co-ordination Directorate.
Market confidence is already soaring. The past 12 months have seen a flurry of private transactions, including ground being broken by Newlyn Development and Catchway Properties in the newly-established Hammarsdale Industrial Park. From the revitalised CBD to the burgeoning light-industrial precincts, Hammarsdale is successfully shedding its "crime and grime" past to become a high-growth destination for manufacturing and global logistics.
