OCEAN INNOVATION AFRICA SUMMIT ENDS WITH BOLD PLAN TO SCALE AFRICA’S BLUE ECONOMY

As the Ocean Innovation Africa Summit concludes today, eThekwini Municipality has reaffirmed its ambition to transform its 100km coastline into a globally competitive hub for sustainable economic growth and environmental stewardship.

Presenting a unified vision, the City unveiled a comprehensive roadmap to unlock the full potential of the blue economy while protecting vital marine ecosystems and supporting coastal communities.

“Our mission is clear: to integrate economic growth with climate resilience,” said Nomalanga Sokhela, Programme Manager for Maritime Industry Development.

She added: “Through targeted investment in maritime sectors, we are unlocking opportunities in ship repair, marine manufacturing, and logistics, attracting private investment while building a strong pipeline of jobs for young people through partnerships with TVET colleges and universities.”

A key pillar of the strategy is a major upgrade of infrastructure and last-mile logistics, ensuring Durban strengthens its position as Africa’s most competitive port precinct.

This is complemented by a firm commitment to coastal resilience, including the reinforcement of seawalls and coastal roads to withstand extreme weather events.

Environmental sustainability remains at the core of the City’s vision

Plans include accelerated wastewater infrastructure upgrades and enhanced pollution response measures to safeguard beach water quality.

These efforts are supported by an Integrated Coastal Management programme focused on dune rehabilitation, mangrove restoration, and large-scale campaigns to eliminate single-use plastics.

The strategy is designed to be inclusive, with targeted support for SMMEs, small-scale fishers, and coastal livelihoods.

The Municipality is also advancing maritime tourism through cruise ship development and waterfront regeneration to ensure broader economic participation.

Collaboration will be critical to success

Through the newly established Blue Economy Forum, eThekwini will coordinate efforts with Transnet, national government, and academic institutions to drive data-led, evidence-based decision-making.

As the conference closes, the Municipality calls on all stakeholders to partner in shaping a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous ocean economy.
