TONGAAT MARKET TRADERS RELOCATED AS MAJOR UPGRADES BEGIN
Traders operating at the Tongaat Early Morning Market, located at 61 Plane Street, oThongathi, will be temporarily relocated from 30 May to allow for refurbishment works at the facility.
During the refurbishment period, traders will operate from Parks Open Field, 1 Edmund Morewood Street, oThongathi, for approximately three months. Trading will continue on Saturdays only from 6am to 1pm.
The refurbishment project includes the removal and disposal of the old asbestos roof, installation of new roof structures and sheeting, repairs to rainwater goods, plumbing upgrades, and painting works. The upgrades are aimed at improving safety, functionality, and customer experience.
Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, Councillor Thembo Ntuli, said the upgrades form part of the City’s ongoing commitment to providing safe, compliant, and well-maintained informal trading facilities.
“The refurbishment of the Tongaat Early Morning Market will create a safer, cleaner, and more accessible trading environment for both traders and shoppers. These improvements will also enhance the appearance of the market and boost customer confidence in the facility,” said Councillor Ntuli.
EThekwini Municipality apologises for any inconvenience caused during the temporary relocation period and appeals to residents, customers, and traders for their patience and co-operation while the upgrades are underway.
