ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TRADING SERVICES COMMITTEE MEETING DECISIONS

The Trading Services Committee, chaired by Councillor Mdu Nkosi, held its monthly meeting on 18 March at Durban City Hall.

The Committee considered and supported several items for recommendation to the Executive Committee.

Below are the key decisions.

SERVITUDE REGISTRATION APPROVED FOR LA MERCY / GENAZANO AREA AND TONGAAT BULK WATER SUPPLY PROJECT IN WARD 58

To address ageing water infrastructure in Ward 58, the Trading Services Committee approved a request from the Real Estate Directorate to register a servitude in La Mercy, the Genazano area, and Tongaat.

This servitude is required for the planned replacement of the current 150mm diameter water pipeline, which has burst repeatedly, disrupting water supply.

The replacement project will install a 400mm diameter bulk water pipe.

A budget of R200 000 has been allocated for the servitude registration process.

“This is a fundamental and crucial phase that translates our intentions into action. We are prioritising all water projects to ensure we move swiftly in addressing water challenges,” said Councillor Nkosi.

ETHEKWINI TO SIGN MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS SOUTH AFRICA

The Municipality will enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Engineers Without Borders South Africa (EWB-SA) to enhance support for engineering education and strengthen community infrastructure delivery.

The partnership aims to equip students, professionals and institutions with the skills, knowledge and competencies needed to co-create sustainable engineering solutions for community-based projects.

EWB-SA is a non-profit organisation advancing socially responsive engineering to address infrastructure and development challenges in under-resourced communities.

Through its Just Infrastructure Lab, EWB-SA has expressed its intention to collaborate with eThekwini Municipality on community-centred infrastructure projects designed to create positive social impact.

Their approach emphasises working closely with local stakeholders while engaging the Municipality throughout each phase.

A joint steering committee comprising representatives from both organisations will be established once the MOU is signed.

The City Manager has been mandated to formalise the signing.

MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT WITH WATER RESEARCH COMMISSION RENEWED

The Committee also approved the renewal of the Municipality’s Memorandum of Agreement with the Water Research Commission for a further 24 months.

This renewed partnership will support the Municipality in addressing sludge non-compliance issues, promoting environmental sustainability, and aligning with national and Municipal environmental goals.

The agreement will enable the completion of key activities including commissioning and inspection certification, knowledge dissemination workshops, and training for eThekwini Water Services staff.
