ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UPDATE ON SOUTHERN AQUEDUCT SHUTDOWN COMPLETION

EThekwini Municipality confirms that the Southern Aqueduct shutdown works were successfully completed on the evening of 31 March 2026.

Water supply restoration commenced on 1 April, with supply progressively reaching affected communities.

The system is currently stabilising following the shutdown. As part of this process, certain areas are experiencing temporary water rationing to allow reservoirs to recover to optimal levels.

In these areas, supply is being shut off during specific periods, particularly at night, to build sufficient storage, before being reopened thereafter.

Affected areas under rationing include:

Klaarwater, Shallcross, Chatsworth, Umlazi, Savannah Park, Nagina, Folweni, Ensimbini, Nsizwakazi, Luganda, and Mawelewele.

Normal supply will resume as the system fully recovers.

The Municipality sincerely appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents during this period and apologises for any inconvenience caused.

The Southern Aqueduct project remains a cornerstone of our long-term water security strategy. It is designed to reduce system losses, strengthen infrastructure, and improve supply reliability across the southern and central regions.
