FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UPDATE: POSTPONEMENT OF PLANNED SOUTHERN AQUEDUCT SHUTDOWN

EThekwini Municipality wishes to inform residents and businesses that the planned shutdown of the Southern Aqueduct pipeline, scheduled for today, 24 March, has been postponed.

This decision follows a reassessment of current operational conditions, which present potential risks to the stability of the water supply system.

The postponement is based on the following factors:

Scouring delays: The ongoing scouring process is taking significantly longer than anticipated, affecting contractor readiness and planned timelines.

Low reservoir levels: System reservoir levels are currently critically low. When combined with ongoing bulk supply challenges, proceeding with the shutdown could compromise system stability.

Inclement weather: Adverse weather conditions may further impact operations and increase risks during the shutdown period.

Given these considerations, the Municipality has taken a precautionary decision to postpone the planned shutdown.

Consumers are advised that water supply will continue as normal, although the system remains under pressure due to existing supply constraints.

A new date for the shutdown will be communicated in due course once conditions are more favourable.
