WARD 69 BLITZ TACKLES ILLEGAL DUMPING, REPAIRS WATER LEAKS AND ENHANCES SERVICE DELIVERY

EThekwini Municipality launched a decisive, multi-faceted intervention across Ward 69 in Chatsworth, focusing on environmental improvements, infrastructure maintenance and enhanced service delivery.

Covering Bayview, Mobeni Heights, Havenside and Silverglen, the intensive weeklong operation delivered immediate and visible results, transforming open spaces, repairing critical infrastructure and restoring a sense of pride and dignity within communities.

The large-scale initiative from 27 to 31 July 2026, brought together multiple municipal directorates and stakeholders to respond to community priorities through business compliance inspections, the removal of illegal dumping hotspots, infrastructure maintenance, environmental clean-ups and direct community engagement.

Residents were also educated on responsible waste management practices and informed about municipal support services available to households and businesses.

Key service delivery interventions undertaken during the operation included the removal of illegal dumping sites and accumulated waste, the cleaning of streets, public open spaces and community facilities, and the repair of streetlights to improve visibility and public safety.

The operation also addressed water leaks to reduce water losses and improve service reliability, while road infrastructure in targeted areas was restored and maintained. In addition, public awareness campaigns were conducted to promote proper waste disposal practices, and community priorities requiring further municipal attention were identified and escalated for appropriate action.

The intervention resulted in a significant improvement in the cleanliness, safety and overall appearance of targeted areas throughout Ward 69.

Once-overlooked spaces were restored, critical infrastructure improvements were completed, and residents witnessed tangible progress in their neighbourhoods.

The operation also highlighted the power of coordinated service delivery and strong partnerships between government, businesses, community leaders and residents in driving local development.

Beyond the immediate impact, the initiative strengthened community engagement and improved awareness of municipal and government support programmes available to residents and businesses.

Commenting on the success of the initiative, Senior Manager Supply Side Area-Based Management, Eurakha Singh, said: “Operation Good Hope demonstrated what can be achieved when municipal departments, community leaders, businesses and residents work together towards a common goal. The initiative not only improved service delivery and enhanced the living environment, but also restored community pride and confidence. It has laid a strong foundation for future development, ongoing collaboration and sustainable service delivery in Ward 69."

Operation Good Hope successfully addressed immediate service delivery priorities while creating a platform for continued engagement and proactive monitoring of community needs.

The initiative stands as a model for collaborative governance, contributing to the long-term development, resilience and well-being of Ward 69 and its residents.
