ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WARD COMMITTEES PRIORITISE COMMUNITIES AS ETHEKWINI DRIVES DRAFT ANNUAL REPORT CONSULTATIONS

Consultations on eThekwini Municipality’s Draft Annual Report 2024/25 gained momentum at the Durban City Hall yesterday, 21 February, where ward committee members from across all Municipal wards gathered for a solution-focused engagement.

Building on recent successful sessions with traditional leaders and people with disabilities, the collective call was clear; accelerate service delivery, close gaps swiftly, and build a resilient and sustainable City for all.

During the engagement, ward committee representatives used the platform to highlight ward-based challenges and collaborate on practical solutions alongside ward councillors, community structures and Municipal officials.

Discussions focused on unblocking service delivery challenges and aligning actions that improve daily life.

Key issues raised included water and sanitation, housing, and unemployment.

Speaking on behalf of eThekwini Speaker, Councillor Sibusiso Lushaba underscored the central role of ward-level leadership and community voices.

“Ward committees are the heartbeat of our communities, translating people’s daily realities into actionable priorities. They help identify gaps, track achievements, strengthen war rooms as problem-solving hubs, and ensure that services reach the people where they live,” he said.

He added that an integrated approach between ward committees, councillors, community structures and the Municipality is critical to accelerating service delivery and shaping the future of the Municipality.

Inputs received during the consultations will inform implementation priorities, help track ward-level performance, and strengthen accountability across the service delivery value chain.

The Draft Annual Report serves both as a mirror and a roadmap, reflecting performance over the past year while outlining the Municipality’s commitment to organisational excellence through transparency, measurable results, and community-driven solutions.

The Secretary of Ward 50, Amy Padayachee, welcomed the platform provided by the Municipality.

“A lot was shared, and there are gaps that have been identified. We hope that following this engagement, the Municipality will resolve these issues and provide feedback on how we can collectively move forward to build a safer and better city for all,” she said.

Public consultations throughout the City are ongoing.

Residents are encouraged to attend, participate and submit inputs to help shape the City’s future and enhance service delivery for all communities.

The public has until 6 March 2026 to comment on the Draft Annual Report.
